The Whitby Archive Heritage Centre is currently closed due to funding difficulties.

Whitby Archive Heritage Centre is a registered charity (number 1110121) (LIMITED BY GUARANTEE ) we hold exhibitions of historical local photographs and artifacts, we are a non profit making organisation and any proceeds raised will be used to continue raising awareness of Whitby's heritage within the community.

The family history department contains hundreds of files on local families, with photographs, birth, marriage and death certificates, family trees, census returns, local enrollment files, donated family papers and copies of many usually hard to find records. We are planning to make the information we hold available to the public although unfortunatley at the moment Family history research requests are completed by the post (please complete the form below or use the contact us link on our website -thank you )

There's more! A photographic department, Oral history tapes, videos, guided tours for parties, regular special events.

Due to the present downturn in the economic climate together with rising utility costs Whitby Archive Heritage Centre is facing closure and are in desperate need of financial support. If you feel you would like to support this very important educational and historical collection we would appreciate a donation to enable our centre to survive. Thank you in anticipation. Please make all cheques made payable to Whitby Archive Heritage Centre.

INVOLVING ALL ASPECTS OF THE COMMUNITY

Since 1983 Whitby Archives and Heritage Centre has been involved with the local community, providing a venue for exhibitions and events, making adult work training places available for Government training scheme placements, giving school children work experience and involving the disabled and those with special needs to become involved with local community work. In addition it provides interesting work for other volunteers of all age groups and abilities, from the surrounding district.

COMMUNITY BASED PROJECTS

Projects in the past have included building an oral archive library by tape recording the spoken memories of older people in the community; taking part in a community video project with Yorkshire television (the film is lodged in the National Museum of Photography and Film, Bradford); Undertaking a two year project to record all readable inscriptions in the ancient St. Mary’s Parish Churchyard and, in conjunction with satellite televisions The History Channel, hosting the northern regions exhibition of historic community photographs, submitted from around the region.

This site is still under construction and will be updated daily as photographs are added.

SOME INTERESTING FACTS

Our project was started in 1983 with six old postcards. We now hold over 95,000 photographs, documents and artefacts.

The photographic collection we hold is owned by the local community.
