Sir Ewen Cameron visits the Whitby Archives Tuesday 23rd March

Sir Ewen Cameron together with a group of dignitaries visited Whitby Archives on Tuesday 23rd March and we feel the day was a huge success. They were shown the exhibition area and huge collection of local history together with an insight into the new digitisation project.
He was presented with a souvenir of his visit in the form of a limited edition, boxed piece of the whalebone which was presented to the town by Thor Heydahl.
Explaining his role, Sir Ewen Cameron said:
"As Rural Advocate I have direct access to the Prime Ministers as well as Government Ministers, and can attend the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Rural, so that I can take rural concerns to the heart of Government."
Sir Ewen Cameron has been Chairman of the Countryside Agency since 1999 and has a long history of living in the countryside and working for it. He was a founder director of the Village Retail Services Association (ViRSA) and a former President of the Country Landowners Association.
His own experiences of living in rural Somerset, where he owns and manages an estate, farming potatoes, wheat, sugar beet and cattle, and where he worked to forge a partnership to provide affordable housing in the village of Whitelackington, inform his work as "a voice at the heart of Government for rural concerns. In the last year he has undertaken a series of visits around the country to meet people from different rural areas.
"It's very important to me to meet people from all around the country, to find out what concerns them and what works well for them."
We would welcome any contributions of old or new Whitby area photographs or memorabilia from people’s personal collection which can be posted on the new website. Please contact us for more details.
We have found a growing and positive interest in the projected facilities/activities and feel there is the scope to develop new and unexpected areas (oral history and film in particular)
Whitby Archives and Heritage Centre has begun a new project to involve villages in their local heritage.
Staff will be on hand to give information on local and family history and visitors will be given the opportunity to consult some of the archives records in village halls. There will be a £1 entry at each venue to cover basic costs and this will also cover free entry into a draw to win a copy of an historic map or picture.
The first opportunity to become involved in the project will be held at the Robinson Institute, Glaisdale, near Whitby on Monday 29th March between 5p.m. till 8 p,m, and will cover information for Lealholm, Fryup, Glaisdale.
Locals are invited to bring their own old photographs and documents along to share with others. If they so wish they can also contribute copies of them to the Whitby Archives new digitisation Project (Funded by the Local Heritage Initiative), which will feature historic photographs etc. from the archive collection on the World Wide Web. A tombola will be available to increase funds to support the new project as Whitby Archives Heritage Centre is a non profit-making organisation with a totally volunteer workforce.”

Mrs Hutchinson, Director of the Archives said “ This will be an informal evening. Everyone is welcome and we hope this new initiative will help to promote local heritage and involve the community.”
