The Whitby Archive Heritage Centre is currently closed due to funding difficulties.
School trips are extremely welcome although prior appointment is necessary. Quizzes and information packs can be provided on request. The following shows a list of subjects we have previously covered:- WWII IN WHITBY Our centre took part in the celebration of peace from July 9th-10th which proved very successful; they contain local history information, pictures on World War II in Whitby, a refugee's account of life during the war...also real true life stories what people experienced.
WHITBY IN QUEEN VICTORIA'S REIGN 1837-1901
Contents include:- The Early Years 1837– 1861 Newsrooms, coastguard station, piers, bridge, post office, steamers, The Cragg, Khyber Pass, jet, Fishburn Park, shipbuilding, upper harbour. The Middle Years 1862—1887 Water supply, spa, hotels, beach, theatre, pavilion, Pleasure boating, regatta, lifeboats, steam ships, churches, carriages, viaduct, golden jubilee The Later Years 1888—1901 Medicine, hospitals, workhouse, dress, schools, trades, services, shops, government, diamond jubilee . Lost Industries of Whitby and the surrounding area-A detailed Illustrated publication on the following subjects- Steamships, Shipbuilding, sailing ships, Windmills, Iron & Ironstone mining, Tanners, Small Businesses, Rope Making, Lime, Brickworks, Whitby Jet, Whaling, Fishing, Alum Mining, Farming.
